Upset in The Ballroom!
Vilareal Shocks Roman to Claim WBC Youth Title!
Ringside Report and Photos by Rocco Morales
This past Wednesday night a sellout crowd turned out to witness the hugely popular “Battle in The Ballroom” show at the Irvine Marriott in Irvine, CA. Fans were treated to a surprising upset as Anthony Villarreal (9-2, 4 KOs) won an eight round split decision victory over the #7 WBC ranked flyweight contender Manny Roman (14-1, 5 KOs).
The show, promoted by Roy Englebrecht Events, was their 26th consecutive sellout and featured a main event with no less than a WBC title at stake.
This eight round bout for the WBC Youth Intercontinental title promised to be a grudge match between two young and hungry fighters looking to make a bigger name for themselves.
Both from Southern California , Vilareal and Roman each brought their own respective cheering section and it was a battle from start to finish.
The undefeated Roman appeared to be the favorite but was floored by a Vilareal left hook in the second stanza of the fight. Roman arose on shaky legs but was able to easily make it to the bell.
While Roman appeared to have the more technically sound boxing skills, it was the aggressive style of Vilareal that shaped the fight as Roman had a hard time dealing with the ever charging Vilareal.
By the sound of the final bell, it was apparent to most in attendance as well as the fighters in the ring, that Villarreal was the victor and that Roman had just suffered his first defeat as a professional.
However, just to make things interesting, a split decision was announced as one judge had it scored in favor of Roman 77-74, but he was correctly overruled by the other two judges by scores of 79-72 and 77-74 for Vilareal.
Hanks Stops Baker!
The six round co-feature heavyweight attraction pitted Joe Hanks against Lawson Baker.
Hanks was too big, too strong and too talented for the overmatched, but gutsy, Baker. Baker gave it a great effort but each time he came forward, he was met with clubbing overhand rights perfectly delivered by Hanks.
Somehow, Baker managed to stay on his feet despite eating many hard shots but, fortunately, the referee saw
enough and called an end to the bout at 1:01 of the third round.
With the victory, the impressive looking Hanks moves to (6-0, 4 KOs), while Baker falls to (5-6-1, 2 KOs)
Centeno Jr. Impressive!
In other supporting action, debuting amateur standout, Hugo Centeno Jr., took on John Dunham in a four round welterweight clash.
Centeno, sporting all gold trunks, jacket and even large cowboy hat, looked as if he had just arrived to a party and he was ready to have some fun when he entered the ring.
Centeno’s fun would come at the expense of Dunham who was the victim of his fast and hard shots before finally succumbing midway through the first round with the referee mercifully calling an end to the fight.
By way of first round TKO, Centeno moves to (1-0, 1 KO) and looks like a very promising young prospect.
In Other Action:
Isael Navarette (6-4, 2 KOs) took on Samuel Yniguez (2-4, 1 KOs ) in a four round bantamweight fight. Neither fighter was seriously hurt during the contest. Navarette was the clear winner with his jab and connection rate. Scores were 40-36 twice and 39-37.
Natu Visania (1-0, 1 KO) won his first professional bout as he stopped Anthony Byoune (1-1, 1 KO) at 1:09 of the opening stanza of a four-round heavyweight contest.
Angel Magdaleno (2-0-2) defeated Alejandro Solorio (0-2) in a four round flyweight contest by way of unanimous decision. Scores of the bout were 39-37 twice and 40-37.
Debuting Jose Sanchez (1-0, 1 KO) executed perfect timing in knocking out Shawn Wate (0-3-1) at 3:00 of the first round in a lightweight bout.
“ Battle in The Ballroom” returns next on Thursday, June 11th to the Irvine Marriott and a limited amount of tickets are available for the always sold out event at www.battleintheballroom.com.
